Erling Haaland, Kevin de Bruyne, and Pep Guardiola win awards as Manchester City win the Premier League championship.

After hosting, Chelsea City won their third straight Premier League championship.

After Arsenal’s 1-0 defeat to Nottingham Forest on Saturday, Manchester City won the Premier League with three games remaining. Between Barcelona, Bayern Munich, and Manchester City, it’s Pep Guardiola’s 11th league championship and City’s fifth in the last six seasons. It was finally time to raise the trophy on Sunday. After a routine 1-0 victory over Chelsea, the ceremony got started. The last goal was scored by Julian Alvarez for City after the majority of the players, including Haaland and Kevin de Bruyne, came off the bench after the 60th minute to thunderous ovation from the home crowd.

The fact that Guardiola has now accomplished this feat with three different teams and three different league championships puts him in amazing territory. He first accomplished the feat with Barcelona from 2008 to 2011, then led Bayern to three trophies from 2013 to 2016, and is currently leading City to the promised land between 2020 and 23. If he repeats the feat the following season, he will become the first manager in English top flight history to win four straight championships. Before we can discuss that, though, Manchester City must prepare for a guard of honor, receive a trophy at the Etihad on Sunday, and attempt to win a treble by winning both the Champions League and the FA Cup. On Sunday, the group was honored by Guardiola for a successful season as they lifted the league trophy and defeated Chelsea 1-0.

In fact, Erling Haaland’s goal against West Ham United set a new Premier League record for goals in a season, therefore this was City’s second guard of honor of the year. Alan Shearer and Andy Cole, who both tallied 34 goals, previously held the record. Haaland presently has 36 and could score more before the season is out. City received special treatment before the game as Chelsea provided a guard of honor.

It is truly unique for a club to be able to cap off their final home game of the year by not only winning the Premier League trophy but also defeating Chelsea, a team who was predicted to challenge for the crown. After the game, jubilant spectators rushed the field and had to be escorted back to their seats to see the trophy lifted.

Despite the fact that City had a strong season, it’s crucial to remember that Arsenal led the league for 278 days this year, thus City wasn’t always in the driving seat for the championship. However, who holds the lead on the last day—and that was Manchester City—is what matters, not who held it for the majority of the season.

Right back Kyle Walker, who has been a part of the team for all five of Guardiola’s championships, responded swiftly when NBC Sports asked him to identify the turning point for City this season. Walker cited beating Liverpool in the league.

“We fought for that victory against Liverpool, who was, as you well know, a strong squad. As a result, Walker stated amidst the cheers, “I think from then on we always thought that we could accomplish it. “Obviously, we traveled to Leeds at that time, which was a difficult location, and eked out a victory there, and it just kind of carried on from there.”

City lift the trophy

A euphoric pitch invasion caused a brief delay in the awarding of City’s winners medals, which were then presented in a ceremony on the field. The Manchester City team arrived to accept the Premier League trophy and their winner’s medals while wearing their 2023–24 home uniforms, which include the number 23 of the Champions of the World on the back. Before Guardiola came from the tunnel to cheers from all across the stadium, the first team management staff were recognized. The entire City team then followed, beaming from ear to ear.

With four goals and two assists in his past two Premier League starts, captain Ilkay Gundogan was instrumental in City’s ascent back to the top of the standings and took the lead in the celebrations. City will need to resolve his contract situation during the summer, but after the celebration comes the triple charge.

After receiving a round of applause from the squad, Haaland raised the trophy. Guardiola was dancing on the field with the club employees and beaming the entire time. It was a great time for the players to receive their moment with the trophy since, despite City’s third straight championship, winning the Premier League trophy never gets old.
