Detroit Red Wings, Mitch Marner, and Matheson
The Detroit Red Wings have a lot of free agents
Kevin Allen of Detroit Hockey NOW: When it comes to the Detroit Red Wings, Steve Yzerman knows there will likely be more free agents when the deal is done. Yzerman and Detroit hold $28.8 million in cap space. Expect that to slow down quickly.
Now, the Red Wings have nine or 10 roster spots to fill with 13 players committed next season. Lucas Raymond and Moritz Seider control most of that money. This is especially true when they receive long extensions. That sounds like a dependency though.
Since several players are not released, that makes the process even more difficult. Joe Veleno has arbitration rights which makes things very sticky. Raymond and Seider won't see an AAV of $8.7 million like Dylan Larkin.
However, the duo could see somewhere around $7.5 to $8 million anyway. If that lowers Detroit's cap to about $6 million. That means the Red Wings could bid on Patrick Kane or maybe Shane Gostisbehere. It cannot be both.
That means David Perron and Daniel Sprong are in a tight spot. Another way for Yzerman to alleviate the problem is to make a trade. Stay tuned!
NHL Rumors: Detroit Red Wings and more
Mitch Marner and the Conflicted Toronto Maple Leafs
Nick Kypreos of the Toronto Stars: OK, Mitch Marner's stats won't carry all the blame as many of Toronto's stars have gone cold. It doesn't help that Toronto is down three games to one and is on the brink of elimination against Boston.
With a few moves made at the trade deadline, Toronto realized they had the roster they needed. However, that hasn't happened yet as the Maple Leafs have fallen on hard times when it comes to their special teams.
NHL Rumors: Time for Toronto and Montreal
Unlike the Detroit Red Wings, Toronto is a special place and being a local player, that doesn't help. Does that mean Marner can be removed? Another elimination for Boston opens up possibilities. Teams like Montreal often have this problem. However, that 56-year drought is causing a star-eating attitude.
