Canelo Alvarez Is Happy With Ryan Garcia's Defeat Over Devin Haney
Canelo Alvarez says he is happy to see his former gym partner Ryan Garcia beat WBC light welterweight champion Devin Haney last month on April 20.
Alvarez was not surprised that Ryan (25-1, 20 KOs) defeated Haney (31-1, 15 KOs). He showed the talent that many believed he had while training in his gym with trainer Eddy Reynoso.
In 2022, he moved on and had coach Joe Goosen for a while before meeting current coach Derrick James.
“Nothing surprises me. I think Ryan has a lot of talent, and I'm excited for him,” Canelo Alvarez told the media when asked about his reaction to Ryan Garcia defeating Devin Haney on April 20.
“I can see that fight and I was very happy. I was a little scared, but I was very happy for him.”
It would be interesting to see how much Kingry has improved now if he sticks with Reynoso because he fought well while working with him. However, with all the stars in that gym, it may be difficult for Ryan to get the kind of one-on-one training he does now with Derrick James.
What's next for Ryan Garcia?
Ryan still hasn't said who he plans to fight next. The player of Golden Boy Promotions, Roberto Diaz, said that the fight between Ryan and WBO light welterweight champion Teofimo Lopez will be a big one. It is possible with a catchweight of 144 or 147.
The timing of the Teofimo fight is not good, considering he is coming off a controversial win over Jamaine Ortiz. Ryan would not have gained anything by fighting Teofimo because he was soundly beaten by Ortiz.
Ryan's biggest fight will be against Errol Spence but that could be very dangerous because he is bigger and stronger than anyone Kingry has faced.
Devin Haney's Uncertain Future
Haney's career is not looking good. If Haney moves up to 147 or 154, his lack of strength will limit his success, and he won't be able to pick off fighters in those weight classes like he did when he first moved up to 140.
The way Haney lost the fight paints a bad picture for him no matter where he goes. Because of his size, he can't stay at 140 for long, but without improving his punching power, his future is bleak. Even the weak links between the champions at 147 and 154 would be a nightmare for Haney.
