Jaime Munguia: “I'm Going For Canelo's Belts”
Jaime Munguia says he will seek the belts of Canelo Alvarez who is the super middleweight champion on Saturday night at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
Munguia (43-0, 34 KOs) feels ready to take down the King of the 168-lb division, Canelo, who has not looked good in the last three fights. If there was ever a time for Munguia to win, now is the time for 34-year-old Canelo to lose.
It's too bad Munguia didn't talk much trash during the promotion's early days because there wasn't much excitement in the boxing world for this fight compared to others involving Canelo in the past.
Canelo (60-2-2, 39 KOs) will be defending his four 168-lb titles against the undefeated Munguia this Saturday, May 4 on Amazon Prime Video PPV and DAZN PPV. The price is $89.99.
Comparing Canelo to John Ryder
Munguia often cites his victory over John Ryder, viewing it as a gauge of his performance against Canelo this time around.
to fight. Using Ryder as a comparison didn't sit well with the fans, but he is the only regular opponent that Canelo and Nukulunia have fought.
It would have meant a lot if Munguia had fought Gennadiy Golovkin years ago before he got old or if he had taken on Caleb Plant. Beating those guys would tell us something about how much of a chance Munguis has against Canelo.
Munguia's Sketchy Victory
Many boxing fans feel that Munguia should be defeated once he resumes his 12 round victory over Dennis Hogan in April 2019 in Monterrey, Mexico. Munguia appeared to have lost the fight, but the judges gave him the win. A replay would have made sense, but Munguia moved on and has lived with that controversial victory.
The fans who were playing at ringside booed Nukullukunia non-stop after the fight, showing that they saw him defeated. So, in reality, Munguia's actual record is 42-1, not 43-0. I think it doesn't matter what Munguia's record is. He was chosen by Canelo as his opponent, and he will make a lot of money.
“I am still undefeated and I am coming to claim my titles. As always, I say I want to fight the best player in this division and Canelo is in that division,” said Jaime Munguia speaking to DAZN Boxing. “It was probably a bad night for Canelo,” Munguia said of his fight with John Ryder last year.
“Maybe it was the altitude in Guadalajara. He [Canelo] I'm tired in the last rounds. It was when Ryder hit Canelo hard. However, I think Canelo handled the fight very well. He used his knowledge and many other things he learned along the way.
“I think it was a good fight for both of us. John Ryder was a great competitor,” said Munguia.
