Munguia's career: The Mexican duo is coming to a crossroads for Canelo in Vegas

MEXICAN duo Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez again Jaime Munguia arrived in style ahead of their big event on Saturday, May 4 at the T-Mobile Arena. Officially kicking off a big fight week, Canelo is looking to dethrone Father Time and maintain his status as one of the best fighters in the sport, even teasing the prospect of a knockout before the eighth round.

“You will see everything on Saturday. I don't care if Munguia is young, he is old, I don't care because Canelo is ultimately different,” said the undisputed king of 168 pounds.

Fighting another Mexican in Las Vegas for the first time since shutting out Julio Cesar Chavez Jr in 2017, Canelo (60-2-2, 39 KOs) explained the importance of his latest challenge.

“It will be historic, two Mexicans fighting for the belts for the first time. That's why I consider it normal to leave my mark and raise my country higher.”

Canelo also had a word about the man who has been following him around like a ghost lately: David Benavidez.

“Why don't we enjoy this war? Jaime Munguia deserves the respect he deserves, and it will be a great fight. The fan who signed with Benavidez, had a grudge since the Golovkin fight apparently!”

Undefeated in 43 bouts with 34 strikes, Jaime Munguia has thankfully held the spot many thought was reserved for Benavidez or Edgar Berlanga. Shockingly knocking out regular adversary John Ryder and tearing down the face of boxing are two separate missions for Munguia, who is well aware of the magnitude of Saturday night's clash.

“I trust my preparations. My team and I have done amazing things together. You'll see that on Saturday night,” said the 27-year-old, who was joined by trainer Freddie Roach and promoter Oscar De La Hoya on stage.

“I'm looking to put him down and Jaime is looking for it too,” added Hall-Of-Famer Roach.

All supporting actors are local, incl Mario Barrios (28-2, 18 KOs), who is part of the main event against aggressive Argentina Fabian Maidana (22-2, 16 KOs). Holder of the WBC Interim welterweight belt, Barrios feels that the experience he has gained from back-to-back defeats to Gervonta Davis and Keith Thurman will be of great help to him moving forward.

Coming off a four-fight winning streak, the younger brother of Marcos Maidana is determined to make a name for himself in the game and vowed to live up to his 'TNT' nickname by bringing the action to Barrios.

WBC Interim featherweight champion Brandon Figueroa (24-1-1, 18 KOs) puts his title on the line against the former WBO super-bantamweight champion Jessie Magdaleno (29-2, 18 KOs).

Out of action for 14 months, 'The Heartbreaker' is looking at WBC heavyweight champion Rey Vargas or a rematch with Stephen Fulton, the only man he has defeated. Fulton returns to the Gervonta Davis-Frank Martin June 15 undercard.

In a battle of undefeated professionals who fought as novices, the 2016 Olympic representative from Lithuania. Eimantas Stanionis (14-0, 9 KOs), will face the two-time Venezuelan Olympian Gabriel Maestre (6-0-1, 5 KOs). They contested Stanionis' WBA welterweight title for the first time.
