Canelo's Big Bucks: $35 Million Payday, But Is It Worth It?
Canelo Alvarez will reportedly earn $35 million+ and his opponent Jaime Munguia is expected to make $10M for tonight's bout at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Canelo Easy Money
This is a good change for Canelo (60-2-2, 39 KOs) who will make what many fans see as a relatively safe fight for the 33-year-old star against Mnguia (43-0, 34 KOs).
Munguia, 27, will be fighting for the fourth time since moving up to 168 in 2022, and has yet to be tested in this weight class.
I think if Golden Boy had put Munguia up against reasonable opposition, he wouldn't be here tonight. He would be food for David Benavidez and David Morrell.
Munguia's Untested Super Middleweight Run
His three fights at super middleweight were against these fighters:
– John Ryder
– Sergiy Derevyanchenko
– Jimmy Kelly
It would have been a great fight if Munguia had proven himself by fighting some of these guys before facing Canelo: David Morrell Jr., David Benavidez, Diego Pacheco, Caleb Plant, Christian Mbilli, and Jermall Charlo.
Boxing Business: Rising Records and Cash Outs
The fact that Munguia has never fought any of those fighters puts him in the same category as Edgar Berlanga, a fighter with a weak CV, high ranking, and no proven track record. Welcome to boxing. That is how it is done in this era. Promoters protect their players by carefully assembling them to create shiny records before they arrange withdrawal battles that they have no chance of winning.
Canelo resisted pressure from boxing fans and the media to take on the more dangerous David Benavidez, which would make him more money but would involve more risk.
Alvarez's argument for not taking a high-risk matchup against Benavidez's extra dough won't be a big enough factor to justify the risk. This is one of the reasons why Canelo is asking for $150-200 million to fight Benavidez because then it would be good.
Canelo is slated to fight Edgar Berlanga next September, and that guy is arguably Munguia's weak point. As I mentioned, Berlanga was brought in the same way as Munguia in terms of making plays against soft opponents to build a glorious 22-0 record, but to no avail.
