Stars Outshine Golden Knights 2-1 in Game 7, Advance to Round 2 – Hockey Writers – NHL News
After two weeks of thrilling action, Round 1 of the Stanley Cup Playoffs is in the books. On Sunday night, the Dallas Stars became the last team to advance to the second round by defeating the Vegas Golden Knights 2-1 at home in Game 7 of their series. Dallas will go on to face the Colorado Avalanche. Furthermore, with the elimination of Vasgas, there will be no re-championship in 2023-24.
Timely Dallas Goals, Vegas Woes
Given the final score of 2-1, one would think that the outcome of the game could have been different. They will be right, more than they can imagine. Seconds before the hosts opened the scoring in the first half, the Golden Knights hit the post that was placed in the Dallas net. Moments later, the Stars applied pressure in the Vegas zone, creating a turnover that allowed Dallas tight end Wyatt Johnston to put a shot on Adin Hill's wrist.
In the second half, Jack Eichel went to Jake Oettinger's left and had a chance at an open net but sent his shot back into the side netting. To their credit, Vegas leveled the conditions with a goal from Brett Howden.

The third period belonged to the Stars, and they made it known early, with Radek Faksa deflecting a shot from the left circle into the top corner at 0:44. Rather than resist being pushed by the Golden Knights, the Stars continued to press, looking for an insurance marker. As time went on, Vegas began to show despondency, but the host showed a very good, strong defense, never allowing their opponents to get good scoring opportunities. Oettinger made 22 saves in the win.
Fun fact: Stars coach Peter DeBoer is 8-0 in Stanley Cup Playoff Game 7s.
For the Golden Knights, their off season begins. For the Stars, Round 2 awaits, as does a well-rested, highly talented Avalanche team.
