Need a golf bag? Here's why you should try the Jones Rover Stand
Jack Hirsh/GOLF
Some golf bags, like many popular cars, have gotten bigger, heavier and more feature-packed over the years. But at some point, we have to ask ourselves – is all this necessary? In most cases, the obvious answer is no.
But that's where Jones Sports Co. fits in – at least golf bags, not cars – and hits the sweet spot with its new Rover Stand bag.
At just 4.2 pounds with a double strap, stand and seven pockets, the Rover Stand is everything you need and nothing you don't, making it the perfect option for those who don't want to go completely minimalist but also don't. I don't want to carry a big bag.
The basics
Jones has taken his popular Rover carry bag – the go-to Sunday bag for many given its double-strap design, multiple pockets and cool pouch – and completely redesigned it, adding a stand and leg mechanism that quickly folds up and sits flat. for improved stability compared to previous Jones stand-up bags.
With an under-bag stand, the pockets have been modified from the smaller Rover stationary to have two equal-sized seat pockets on either side near the floor. While not as large as traditional cargo pockets that span the full length of the bag, these pockets offer plenty of room to carry essentials, and that brings us to the next cool feature.
In contrast the hip pad is one of the best designed phone pockets and essentials you will find in a golf bag. The zipper is easily accessible, and there is a separate sleeve to keep the phone and its screen away from any sharp keys to prevent scratches. Every pocket is padded, so anything you put in there – and there's plenty of room – will be protected.
The stand bag also features an eight-inch three-sided horizontally divided top, perfect for carrying a full set of 14 clubs without any issues. And for you golfers who play medium or large grips, the large gaps between the spacers help prevent the grip from getting stuck when pulling the club into the bag.
Caddies will love the dual strap system, which functions as two separate straps, making the use of one strap on either shoulder easy. But the bag works best when using both straps, as it balances well and is firm on your back, making it easy to move around.

What can be improved?
While the Rover Stand bag is as close to a good hiking bag as we've come across, there are still a few things Jones could tweak for future iterations.
First, the main strap is a touch short and has limited length adjustability. This isn't a huge problem, but if you're a tall golfer (say over 6-foot-5) who needs more room, the straps can feel snug.
Finally, the catch-all-top pocket on the back of the bag is perfect for all sorts of things, but it doesn't have an insert to hold a water bottle. Still, that's a bit much, and we still think the new Rover Stand could be your next favorite golf bag.
