NHL Rumors: Montreal Canadiens, and Chicago Blackhawks
Could the Montreal Canadiens trade the No. 1 pick? 5? Should they be interested in Trevor Zegras?
Stu Cowan of the Montreal Gazette: (mailbag) The Montreal Canadiens hold the No. 1 pick. 5 in the NHL draft. They are organizationally deep on the blue line and should look to score goals up front.
The only option the Canadiens should consider trading the fifth overall pick is for a young, proven scorer.
It's hard to say how much interest the Canadiens will have in Anaheim Ducks forward Trevor Zegras. He still has two years left on his $5.75 million per cap deal. They should be interested in him. Zegras is a good friend of Cole Caufield and the two played together at the World Championships.
NHL Rumors: Maple Leafs, Flames, Canadiens, Jets, Utah, and Golden Knights
The Chicago Blackhawks would like to add a top-six forward and a top-four defenseman
Ben Pope of the Chicago Sun-Times: Chicago Blackhawks GM Kyle Davidson thinks they are ready to take a step forward next year. He knows they have to be deep and they can deal with that in the offseason.
“We hope that we can build something in the summer – whether it's a trade, a free offer or the development of our young players who are looking for places – so that the boys come to the camp knowing that they have to find a place in this team. because there are other players around them who are fighting for the same places,'' said Davidson.
''It is important to create a competitive culture and . . . force players to raise their game. That's the goal. We're still looking to be responsible for what we're doing from a long-term perspective, but that doesn't mean we can't improve our situation in the short term, too.''
Davidson's long-term goal is to continue to improve and maintain cap space, so they don't sacrifice that this offseason.
NHL Rumors: Carolina Hurricanes, Vegas Golden Knights, and Detroit Red Wings
Don't expect to see the likes of Jake Guentzel, Sam Reinhart and Mitch Marner next in a Blackhawks jersey. They would like to add a top player to the front six and back four.
Potential targets could include Jake DeBrusk, Teuvo Teravainen, Chris Tanev and Alexandre Carrier.
