Tottenham face Premier League rivals Chelsea's Conor Gallagher

Aston Villa have been named as potential suitors for Tottenham Hotspur's pursuit of Chelsea's Conor Gallagher.

Gallagher is approaching the final 12 months of his contract with Chelsea, willing to listen to the club's offers to sign him despite his prominent role in Mauricio Pochettino's squad.

North London rivals Spurs have long been interested in Gallagher and are likely to test Chelsea's decision with a bid this summer, although concerns over the Blues' asking price have appeared to be an issue in talks between the two clubs.

Well, now The Telegraph State Gallagher has a new striker in the form of Villa, who are looking to strengthen their squad ahead of next season's Champions League.

Importantly, despite Chelsea's willingness to listen to offers, Gallagher has not decided to stand firm and stay at Stamford Bridge this summer and will only leave if it makes sense for him.

Chelsea's reluctance to keep players on expiring contracts was also highlighted by co-owner Todd Boehly earlier this month as part of the explanation for why the Blues are handing out such long contracts to their new players.

“The reality is in European football, if you're on a seven-year contract, the way we look at it is a five-year contract, right?” Boehly started.

“Because the accumulation of the trade value is such that you will not let the contract expire until the last year. You will extend the contract or you will look at what is next for that player.”

Pochettino has made it clear that Gallagher is an important part of the team but the boss himself faces an uncertain future ahead of a review of his position which was planned when the two clubs first shook hands last year.
