Two of Real Madrid's most famous players are set to sign new contracts
Luka Modric is set to join Real Madrid veteran Toni Kroos in extending his contract with the club for another season, according to reports.
Manager Carlo Ancelotti is bringing a new generation of midfielders to the Bernabeu including Jude Bellingham, Federico Valverde, Eduardo Camavinga and Aurelien Tchouameni.
Looking to the future, both Kroos and Modric look set to complete their trophies in the Spanish capital at the end of the 2023/24 season.
However, news that Kroos would be staying on for another year broke in late March – although not yet officially – and now, perhaps more surprisingly, reports of Modric's desire to stay have emerged. Both AS and Marca claim that the Croatian Ballon d'Or winner has accepted his reduced playing time this season, although he still proved to be a key member of the squad in the latter stages of the campaign, particularly during the run to the Champions League final.
Both reports highlight the role of club president Florentino Perez in facilitating their stay.
There is now an 'agreement in principle' for Modric to stay at Madrid, with his agent Vladica Lemic also telling Arab media outlet Kooora: “The most likely thing is that he will stay for one year and continue to make history.
“Real Madrid is the best club in the world and is led by the best president in the history of football. Luka Modric is a Real Madrid fan who loves the club and considers it his home.”
Kroos and Modric have made 32 and 30 La Liga appearances respectively this season, although the German has played 2,043 minutes compared to the former Tottenham Hotspur star's 1,590.
Kroos has been used more often in the Champions League, starting nine European games while Modric has been included in the starting XI just three times.
