Speaking time is over. As long as there are no last-minute disasters, Tyson Fury will step into the ropes in Saudi Arabia tomorrow to face Oleksandr Usyk, the undefeated heavyweight champion, in a fight scheduled for 12 rounds. At stake will be no less than the undisputed heavyweight champion of the world, a position one can only hold if he holds every major title in the division. How big of a deal is it when someone becomes the undisputed heavyweight champion? Let's just say the last undefeated major league champion was Lennox Lewis, and his reign was years ago.
And while it is true that there is much more to boxing than belts, the truth is that people have been waiting a long time for a new king to be crowned. Years ago this writer felt that the heavyweight championship would be between Fury, Deontay Wilder, and Anthony Joshua. Are you sick? He wasn't even on the list. But, of course, the talented Ukrainian defeated Joshua twice, and Fury finished Wilder in three memorable fights. Now the smoke has cleared and only two men remain. The fact that they will face each other tomorrow means a lot in this game.
What makes this upcoming fight even more interesting is that neither Fury nor Usyk has ever tasted defeat. Both are undefeated as well as holders of major belts. Who will be left with a zero in their loss column? The world is about to get you – unless, of course, the fight ends up being a draw, a no-contest due to something like an injury, or a draw. The fact that the draw is possible seems to be worrying a few savvy sportsmen lately, and for good reason.
First of all, these two fighters seem evenly matched on paper, and it's probably easy to imagine that the judges will be able to pick a winner when the bout ends on Saturday (provided twelve rounds are completed). Furthermore, Fury has already fought to a draw in a major fight, his memorable debut against Wilder back in 2018. However, it seems that there is a better chance of a fight that provides an undisputed champion than a draw, a draw. or no contest decision.
In short, we may have a new heavyweight champion crowned this weekend. A lot has been said before Saturday's fight, but there really isn't much left to say yet. Now it's time for Tyson Fury and Oleksandr Usyk to talk.
