Surprise: Denys Berinchyk Bests Emanuel Navarrete

Written by: Sean Crose

Hours after Oleksandr Usyk won his brilliant heavyweight fight against Tyson Fury, the WBO lightweight title was at stake in San Diego. Emanuel Navarrete, an exciting 38-2-1 fighter squared off against 19-0 Denys Berinchyk in a scheduled 12-rounder. The winner can enjoy esteemed company like Vasyl Lomachenko, Shakur Stevenson, and Tank Davis. Suffice it to say that neither man looked like he belonged in the ring with those stars on Saturday. The fight, frankly, was just a slobberknocker where neither man sat well with the other. The problem was that each fighter used tricks in the ring, which eventually made the fight difficult.

Not that it wasn't fun to attend ESPN's broadcast battle. Navarrete always brings the action, and Berrinkchyk was clearly in it to win it. In short, the fight was a high-octane affair – it just wasn't great, at least not in a championship-level match. In the end, it was Berinchyk who left the ring with the WBO belt due to a split decision of the judges. The official decision made Berinchyk the latest Ukrainian fighter to win a major title, although it was clear that Berinchyk was nowhere near as good as his compatriot Usyk was earlier in the day.
