It finally happened after more than 24 long years. We finally have another undisputed world heavyweight, and it was an event that lived up to expectations.
The last time we had a fight for the undisputed world champions was in November 1999. At that time, the heavyweight boxing division had the second longest gap without one, as it has been 7 years since Riddick Bowe kept it. difference in December 1992. Prior to that the longest gap was almost 10 years between Leon Spinks and Iron Mike Tyson.
That November '99 bout between joint WBA/IBF heavyweight champion Evander Holyfield and WBC and world heavyweight champion Lennox Lewis was a rematch of their fight from 8 months earlier in March. That was supposed to produce a new World Heavyweight champion, but that ended up being a fight where many observers believed Lewis did enough to win. A rematch resolved the issues, and this time Lennox was awarded a unanimous decision victory to become the undisputed king of the heavyweight division. It didn't last long, however, as a few months later in April 2000, the WBA stripped Lennox of their championship belt, and it was the last time we had an unknown world heavyweight champion.
Until now.
In a battle between two undefeated heavyweight champions, joint IBF/WBA/WBO heavyweight champion Oleksandr Usyk defeated WBC and lineal world heavyweight champion Tyson Fury to become the first undefeated heavyweight champion since it was Lennox Lewis. That victory marked Usyk as the first undisputed World Heavyweight Champion in the current 4-belt era, and made him only the second boxer in history to be the undisputed champion in both the cruiserweight and heavyweight divisions, putting Usyk in special company with Holyfield. .
