Callaway's secret episode appeared on Tour. Here's what we know
Jonathan Wall
FORT WORTH, Texas – The dictionary defines an “Opus” this way: “A composition of music” or “A literary work or composition, such as a book.” Callaway isn't breaking into the music scene or writing a magnum opus anytime soon, but they do have something cooking in the short game area — a true masterpiece that quietly emerged Tuesday at the Charles Schwab Challenge.
Callaway's Opus prototype wedge can be found in the bags of several professionals in the field, including Chris Kirk and Max Greyserman. Tour sources also confirmed to GOLF.com that Xander Schauffele and Jon Rahm are using prototype versions of the wedge that don't sport the Opus name.
If you don't count the high toe option and the new grind added to the Jaws Raw lineup, the last wedge Callaway released was the Jaws Raw in 2022. Callaway officials could not comment on the prototype, but Opus is believed to have been arrested. to sell at some future time.
One of the biggest questions yet to be answered is who designed the sword. Former wedge designer Roger Cleveland was introduced as EVP of Terra Forza Golf earlier this year and plans to focus on shaft projects going forward. That means the Opus could be his breakout creation or the first short game tool for a new wedge design team.
Compared to the latest Jaws offering, the Opus has moved away from the weight holes located at the back of the head which helped to change the launch depending on the top position. A thick piece of metal is placed directly behind the striking surface and possibly helps to give a sense of stiffness. It is possible that the bundle is used to change the boot properties.
The toe profile is reduced to provide a traditional address look. The overall profile also appears to be more rounded than the current Jaws.
As for the leading edge, it appears to have a slight rotation on the straight edge. The wedge found in Greyserman's bag features a C-Grind and satin finish, but it's fair to assume that other grind options will be offered – if they're available to mere mortals.
For now, however, all golfers can do is enjoy the photos and start the countdown clock for potential sales releases.
