Exclusive: Arsenal star sure to cash out but £15m must be rejected, says expert
Arsenal goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale's departure from the club appears to be a matter of when, not if, according to journalist Charles Watts.
Specially speaking CaughtOffside in his Daily Briefing column this week, Watts explained that although Ramsdale himself has played down links with Newcastle United, it still seems inevitable that the Englishman will move on sooner or later.
Ramsdale was Arsenal's first choice until David Raya arrived on loan from Brentford, and the Spanish stopper is now clear that he was Mikel Arteta's first choice in that position.
So, it makes sense for a player as high as Ramsdale to look for a move elsewhere, but Watts has urged Arsenal not to accept just £15million for the 26-year-old, as his price has risen from the £30m they bought him for. first he paid to sign him.
Ramsdale transfer: The Arsenal goalkeeper is sure to leave but £15m isn't enough
Discussing Ramsdale's future, Watts said: “The rumors about Aaron Ramsdale and Newcastle have been around for a long time. It has certainly been expected for the past few months that this is a move that could happen in the summer window, but I have yet to hear that anything has been agreed.
“Ramsdale quickly dismissed talks of any deal last week, but I think he'll be on the road in the next few months.
“Obviously we have the Euros and he will be away with England, that could delay things and Arsenal also need to be sure they can find someone to fill his place before giving permission to leave.
“But I think both of these things will happen. It's a matter of when Ramsdale leaves, not if.
“The important thing for Arsenal is to get value for money. I saw the initial fee of £15 million mentioned in the reports last week and that is frankly ridiculous. Arsenal signed Ramsdale for around £30m two years ago and he has developed into an excellent goalkeeper since then.
“He is young, he is from home, an English player who has made a name for himself and has a long contract. Of course, interested clubs will know that Arsenal's position in any negotiations will be somewhat weakened if they are behind David Raya in the process, but that should not mean that the club should offer him.
“Ramsdale is a great goalkeeper and he showed that at Arsenal. “If you look at what other goalkeepers have moved for in the last few seasons, a £15m bid shouldn't even be what Arsenal are excited about.”
