The club is now plotting a third exit from Everton along with Branthwaite and Onana

Any cause for rejoicing after securing Premier League safety for another season could be short-lived for Everton, and the summer transfer window could be full of frustration.

Without being stripped of points last season, Everton would have avoided relegation and sat comfortably in mid-table. That was their reality, however, and their problems off the pitch are far from over, with 777 colleagues now looking unlikely to secure Premier League approval. On the left in No Man's Land, the Toffees may be in a position where selling star players is their only option this summer.

If so, then Amadou Onana and Jarrad Branthwaite would be the most expensive assets likely to leave, with Newcastle United interested in the former and Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United reportedly eyeing a move. Both exits will ease Everton's financial worries but, in doing so, significantly weaken Sean Dyche's side, who look unlikely to find new reinforcements without a takeover.

Furthermore, Branthwaite and Onana are not the only players to leave. According to The Telegraph, Newcastle are set to sign Dominic Calvert-Lewin as they look to face Everton twice and a third upset exit in the summer, if Onana and Branthwaite leave.

Suddenly, the Toffees will be without a centre-back, starting midfielder and striker who will have a summer full of negatives at Goodison Park. While Calvert-Lewin has his own injury problems, given a move is already on the cards for Merseyside, the striker is another Dyche should look to hold on to.

When the summer window opens, Everton's backs certainly look set to be against the wall as they struggle to keep the foundations of Dyche's side together.

“Good” Calvert-Lewin is still important to Everton

If Everton had the financial backing, then securing a suitable replacement for Calvert-Lewin could be the next step following his injury struggles, but even if they stay out of it, the striker is still important, especially if he avoids another absence.

Dyche is also a fan, as he told BBC Sport back in April after Calvert-Lewin scored against Merseyside rivals Liverpool: “I thought he played very well. His performance was very impressive. This season was not too bad with injuries. But it shows that it takes time mentally and physically to get your mind off that and start playing freely again.”

In 26 games, the Englishman finished with seven goals and two assists in the Premier League this season with four of those goals coming in Everton's last seven games.

It's the kind of form that has seen Newcastle emerge as a possible destination, but it's also the kind that could end Everton's quest for a consistent goalscorer once again. That said, Calvert-Lewin looks like he may have a decision to make this summer, one way or another at Goodison Park.
