DEONTAY Wilder has promised to get back to his old ways on Saturday night. Fans were left confused and, at times, frustrated that the one-time destroyer couldn't pull the trigger in the same spot last December against the tough Joseph Parker.
There will be no more imitation weapons that have made it to the Kingdom Arena, insists Wilder, who says he has regained his temper in time to punish Zhilei Zhang.
“As I promised the State the first time, I could not pull the trigger but I have come again, the second chance to be able to pull the trigger, so I am looking forward to doing that. In the end he gave the State one of those exciting and amazing talks,” he said to the gathered media.
Describing himself as the hardest puncher in history, Deontay certainly made a name for himself by wiping out opponents in a way that hasn't been seen in years in the heavyweight division.
The victims weren't just released; they are sent to another dimension by a fighter with obvious technological flaws, who can change everything with a flick of the wrist.
“The things I do to a person, in that body, there are no others except anyone who has ever done them. But I can say that, I fell out of love. I lost love for this business because of many things that happened,” he lamented.
“But this time, my fire has been rekindled. Especially coming to the Kingdom, being able to be accepted for who I am, having that love and being able to speak as I want.
“I speak from my heart, I allow my mouth to be translated into what my heart says as a hero. I only tell people how I feel like a hero.”
Delivering monologues with the flamboyance of a seasoned preacher, Wilder says that those who criticize his efforts are always watching the entertainment unfold and are, therefore, complicit in his works.
“When you go to war, you don't try to have no survivors, you try to eliminate all their pieces if they are against you, do you understand me?”
It's difficult not understanding such emotive language. The catch here is that the enemy Zhilei Zhang can hit hard himself. While Joe Parker takes advantage of Wilder's attitude by picking up punches and picking up rounds, Zhang will likely let his hands go early and often.
“I like Zhang, you know, I like his fighting style. I love his big head, it will be a great goal to hit. At least it's an easy goal to hit,” said the 38-year-old Wilder.
Is the former WBC champion feeling the pressure of a career-ending night?
“It will be interesting to come on Saturday night to see what happens. As he said, he found the power of China against the power of Alabama. At the end of the day, we know the power doesn't go out, but somebody's lights will go out.”
Such is Wilder's tendency to not only spin heads but also strings, he was able to turn his relationship with Eddie Hearn into something positive.
“I'm here [the] the kind of person i love change and that's what we need in the world. Many people in the world can learn from this.
“I feel that we all need each other and the same reason we fight each other, different cultures, different regions, different religions, different things, [is] because we don't understand each other.
“I feel like Eddie is a promoter and what promoter wouldn't want to promote Deontay Wilder? One of the most brutal artists, one of the greatest artists of a generation – ever?”
Getting past Zhang is the only thing on Wilder's mind right now (boxing's only thing, anyway), but if he can rekindle some old energy and look impressive, the Parker fight will be a quickly forgettable bump in the road.
Who knows where that road ultimately leads? And Tyson Fury, a man who has already used his power over Wilder, is expected to have a rematch with Oleksandr Usyk next.Deontay may be left on the edge of the title.
Opportunities will always present themselves to the most exciting person. The Fury-Usyk clash two weeks ago delivered the kind of high-octane, frenetic excitement the American finisher has provided since his 2008 debut.
“I thought [Fury vs. Usyk] it was a big fight,” he admitted. “I was on the phone, I didn't know who would win. I always think that's what a dog brings to a fight and Oleksandr's bite was bigger than his own and I think he was robbed in the ninth round of the knockout.
“Gifts, gifts, gifts, given, you know, but at the end of the day, he [Usyk] You won and I congratulate you. I thank him very much and I wish him nothing but to move forward.”
Either Wilder or Zhang could add to the giveaway this Saturday evening when the world is waiting for someone to wrap up and deliver a memorable KO.
