Competitors at this year's US Women's Open at Lancaster Country Club are facing their own challenges: multiple team backups, tough conditions – even Nelly Korda was out 10 cards! But no one else in the field has ever faced the sticky situation that Rachel Rohanna did on Thursday, involving her baby.
Rohanna, who earned a berth in the field as a sectional qualifier — a medalist, in fact — is playing in her fourth US Women's Open. In a tough game against Lancaster CC in 3 12, Rohanna and her team encountered a lot of backup players. That's when Rohanna turned her attention to her husband, Ethan, who was watching the show with the couple's children, 5-year-old Gemelia and eight-month-old Greenlee, who was in a stroller.
What did Rohanna notice? Any parent can guess.
“There was a backup with the play and then there was, you know, the opposite of the backup in the stroller,” Rohanna said after her round. “There were, I think, four teams or something in the tee box. I was talking to my husband and I looked down and I happened to see that my youngest had just — he went to the bathroom all over the place. I was like, Ethan. So I got them in between the ropes and we went into the roped area and changed him . It was a two-man effort to take care of that.”
A competitor who changes a diaper in the middle of the US Women's Open should be the first. But Rohanna took it slow.
“At first I was like, I'm not sure if he can get through the ropes,” he said. “Oh, whatever. No one will say anything. It's just me and him. So I said, he should have – like I said, he should have come in because it was a two-person effort. Yeah, no, it was everywhere. “
Rohanna posted an opening round of 76 – six over, though he made the 12th. Rohanna said she is playing a lot on the Epson Tour and hopes to finish well this week to improve her LPGA status.
“Trying to stay with it and persevere through everything in my game, and I think there's a lot of good that I see coming back with my game,” he said. “I think if I can do what I know, I'll be fine.”
