Chelsea are eyeing a “monster” £40m upgrade for Sterling
Chelsea have been known to spend big since taking over from Todd Boehly back in 2022, with the Blues spending more than £1bn in their two years in charge at Stamford Bridge.
Midfielder Raheem Sterling is one of the biggest signings of the last few years, having joined the club for £47.5m back in the summer of 2022 from Premier League rivals Manchester City.
Expectations were high on the striker to secure his first league title since the 2016/17 season – even handing the 29-year-old a monster deal worth £325k-a-week, according to Capology, he is the Blues' top earner.
The move did not go as well as either side had hoped, with the striker only managing to find the net 19 times in his 81 appearances for Chelsea – an average of one goal every 4.3 games.
His lack of form, coupled with his high wages could spell the end of his time at Stamford Bridge this summer, with the club also looking to sign an upgrade on the former City striker, in the form of a 2023/24 performer.
Chelsea are interested in the £40m talent
After welcoming new manager Enzo Maresca, according to Fabrizio Romano, Chelsea are now battling Liverpool in the race to sign Leeds United winger Crysencio Summerville, following the Whites' failure to secure an immediate return to the Premier League.
The 22-year-old has been the man of the match this season and remains a key player for Leeds in the Championship, scoring 19 goals and registering nine assists in the competition, where they failed to gain promotion after losing 1-0 to Southampton. Wembley.
His tally of 28 goals and assists this campaign puts him third in the top-scoring category – a figure that caught the attention of the Blues ahead of the summer.
Football Insider reported this week that Daniel Farke's side will be in dire need of fundraising following the final defeat, and the Dutch defender could be available for around £40m this summer.
Why Summerville can transform Chelsea's attack
While Chelsea themselves need to be careful with their spending this summer, Summerville would be an excellent and valuable addition to Sterling's two-year stay at Stamford Bridge.
Despite playing in the lower division last season, the Dutch midfielder produced some impressive stats, many of which could prove to be a huge asset to Maresca's side should they win the race for his services this summer.
Summerville reached 2.5 with 90 points in Farke's men's Championship, a figure that puts him in 9% of all strikers in England's second division.
When comparing Sterling and Summerville in terms of goals scored in the league this campaign, the Dutchman blows the Englishman out of the water, scoring 11 more than the current Chelsea striker.

The Dutchman, described as a “1v1 monster” by commentator Ben Mattinson, has many goals and assists, and has produced more contributions for 90, a club that needs to pursue Leeds' talent.
While Cole Palmer has nailed down the right-back, the left-back needs major improvement if the Blues are to push for a Champions League spot next season.
All of Summerville's statistics show just how threatening they are in the final third, as the club desperately needs to invest in new attacking players to close the gap created by the top four this season.
