Austin Brooks returns to action against Aram Avagyan in his Toro Promotions debut
Austin Brooks has found a mentor to guide his professional career.
Brooks, a potential junior lightweight, has signed a deal with Toro Promotions, it was announced Thursday afternoon. Toro Promotions also announced that Brooks will return to action on June 15, against the previously beaten Aram Avagyan at the Emerald Queen Casino in Tacoma, Washington.
The 10-round fight will headline the EQC Fight Night card.
“Both Toro Promotions and Sheer Sports Management see Austin Brooks as the embodiment of the American Dream,” said Azat Torosyan, President of Toro Promotions. “We agree that he has been overlooked and is capable of achieving great things in sports and we will stop at nothing to help him in his endeavor.”
Brooks (12-0, 5 knockouts), a native of Coeur d'Alene, Idaho and now living in San Diego, La Mesa, California, last fought on February 10, knocking out Cuban-born Jose Manuel Izaguirre. the seventh round. This fight was a clash of undefeated junior lightweights.
In his last fight on August 26, also at the Emerald Queen Casino, southpaw Brooks stopped Anthony Chavez in the sixth round.
The 28-year-old expects a tough challenge from Avagyan, but will rely on his skills and mental toughness from a tough upbringing to emerge victorious.
“(Avagyan) is going to be my biggest rival by far,” Brooks said. “He is strong and experienced. I treat every fight like my next fight and I treat all my opponents the same way. Right now, I'm 100 percent focused on doing what I need to be great.
“I was raised by a single parent, and he did everything he could, but we faced many problems. It made me stronger, going from school to school. I was fighting with myself. I lived out of my car and in foster homes, but I wouldn't change a thing. Looking back, it made me who I am, and the love of this game motivated me because I felt it could help me become someone.”
Brooks is coached by Basheer Abdullah.
Avagyan (11-1-2, 5 KOs), a native of Yerevan, Armenia and now residing in Burbank, California, suffered his first loss as a champion in July 2021, a unanimous decision loss to Martino Jules. Avagyan wouldn't fight again until April 12, stopping fighter Juan Santiago after the third round.
The 33-year-old went on a four-fight unbeaten streak (Evgeny Smirnov, Francisco Esparza, Dagoberto Aguero and Jose Nuñez) in a row between 2018 and January 2021, posting a 2-0-2 record.
On the Toro Promotions card, Tsonte Rogava (8-0, 7 KOs), a native of Ukraine who now resides in Marina Del Rey, California, will face Seattle's Joe Bolden (10-13-1, 7 ). KO) in an eight-round bout.
