NHL rumors: Detroit Red Wings, and Chicago Blackhawks
Should the Detroit Red Wings look to trade a goaltender?
Bob Duff of Detroit Hockey Now: Sure the Detroit Red Wings could trade a goaltender this offseason, but should they? They tried this route recently and it didn't work for them.
Ville Husso has one year left at $4.75 million and Alex Lyon is under contract. If they were to trade goalkeepers, they would have to take one of the two out. Husso was not going to be an easy move.
Could the Red Wings be on Linus Ullmark's no-trade list? It is doubtful. The Boston Bruins are believed to be asking for a first-round pick in any deal for Ullmark. He's a year away from $5 million.
Jacob Markstrom has two years left at $6 million and Filip Gustavsson has two years left at $3.75 million believed to be available. Gustavsson's numbers were down last season.
NHL rumors: Vegas Golden Knights, and Montreal Canadiens
The Chicago Blackhawks-New York Islanders draft trade was not a precursor to anything for the Blackhawks.
Phil Thompson of the Chicago Tribune: Chicago Blackhawks GM Kyle Davidson said the trade they made with the New York Islanders was about getting previous first- and second-round picks and not a prelude to another deal.
“It's been really funny watching all the talk about that trade,” he said. “It was funny, actually.
“For us, it was our internal knowledge that indicated that it was an improvement in value, so we did it. You're right, a second(-rounder), no matter how late you pick it, doesn't matter. That said, we have a lot to choose from. … We just felt that the selection we're getting has a better value package than what we've been sending.
“Honestly, it was that simple. It's not a prelude to anything. It is not the first domino to fall. It was interesting to read all the ideas about what the next move was going to be.”
NHL Rumors: Could Martin Necas be traded this week? There are no formal interviews for Travis Konecny
Davidson added that they didn't make the trade with any specific players in mind but the chances of getting someone better at Nos. 18 and 50 than at 20, 54, and 61.
