Who will shake Jack Nicklaus' hand? We will learn that on Sunday afternoon.
But who would do it like to?
We heard the answer this week. The act of the 18-time major champion was done on the 18th of the Memorial, the tournament he hosts, and the greeting is appreciated, experts say.
“Yeah, this is a special place for me,” Scottie Scheffler said. “I remember when I was in college, I came here and played — I was going to play in the US Open qualifiers on other courses here; I can't remember what their names are right now. But yeah, we'd always come and watch a practice round and stay an extra day and watch a bit. I have always dreamed of coming here to play in this tournament and it is just a dream to be here on the field. So I'm happy. It means a lot to me to be able to shake hands and win this historic golf tournament here and that Mr. What Nicklaus means to the game.”
“Oh, it would be special,” said Collin Morikawa. “Look, what Jack has done in this game, what his voice has done, what he stands for, is a lot. You can't replace history, you can't replace someone like that, so to get that opportunity hopefully come Sunday, it will mean the world. Like I said, I'm talking about Tiger [Woods], it's like talking about Jack. Yeah, you know, he was a little bit before I got into golf, but history is history. If you have someone like that, one of the greatest, if not the greatest, right? It is an absolute honor.”
“Yeah, it's a dream,” Xander Schauffele said. “I think any Tour professional can tell you that if you look at the type of non-majors, this is very high. You know, you're trying to win Jack's, you're trying to win Arnie's [Arnold Palmer Invitational]trying to win Tiger [Genesis Invitational], you throw the Players in there, but these are a little different obviously with — like you said, what Jack did for the game of golf and he grew it with us being a small part of it. So, it would be great. “
“Yes, it's great,” said Viktor Hovland, who won the Memorial last year. “Obviously since I've been coming here for a few years, I've seen Jack and seen him in other places, so it wasn't like the first time I met him. But, yeah, to be around a guy like that who's accomplished so much, it's great, so to win his tournament here in Columbus, it's very important.”
In the best position to shake hands is Scheffler, who leads Morikawa, Adam Hadwin and Sepp Straka by four holes after 54 holes. Scheffler and Morikawa will form the final pairing, while Hadwin and Straka are part of the penalty team.
Coverage of Sunday's final round begins at 12:30 p.m. Sunday on the Golf Channel, with CBS picking it up at 2:30 p.m.
