'It's not over' for Blair Cobbs, who portrays Adrien Broner
RESULT: Blair Cobbs defeated Adrien Broner by unanimous decision in 10 rounds. The judges posted scores of 96-93 (twice) and 97-91, all in favor of Cobbs. The fight took place at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Hollywood, Florida.
IMPORTANT TIMES: After a slow opening, Cobbs dropped Broner heavily in the second round. A straight left from Adrien caught Adrien as he squared up. Broner tried to spit to buy more time, but the referee pushed it back in!
RECORDS: Cobbs added a worthy name to his current record of 17-1-1 (10 KOs). Broner falls to 35-5-1 (24 KOs).
TALKING POINTS: Before the bout, the two main talking points were whether Cobbs could stay focused and open and whether Broner could raise his work levels.
The likes of Malignaggi, Porter, Maidana, Mikey Garcia and right-hander Daniel Ponce de Leon have all troubled Broner with a high workload. Cobbs followed that plan.
Commentary suggested that between rounds two (the knockdown round) and three, one of Broner's teeth was swept off the canvas. Cobbs was constantly attacking the body, which was a good strategy considering the amount of weight Broner had spent in preparation for the fight.
QUOTABLE: “This was a four-division world championship, so Blair the Flair can do his best after being laid off for two years,” Cobbs shouted.
“Look at his neck, his neck is big. He survived many major incidents after being knocked down. I've been waiting my whole life for this fight: Blair the Flair vs. Adrien Broner.”
WHAT HAPPENS NEXT: The world is Cobbs' oyster as he holds the WBC People's Championship. The bottom line is, although Cobbs didn't specify his next move, he gave a rousing speech to encourage fans and viewers who may be struggling in life, with each line inscribed with the word, “It's not over.”
Champions in and around 147 can look to Cobbs as a viable option for the future. Broner, on the other hand, has been out of the ring following defeat number five and is becoming less important as his career continues to fade. Looking slow and heavy, unable to sustain or sustain any attack, it was a sad performance for a boxer who once made people happy.
SUPPORTING CAST: Michael Hunter once again added momentum to his heavyweight career with a 10-round decision win over a lackluster Cassius Chaney. Ian Green defeated Roy Barringer in 10 rounds at middleweight.
