Louis van Gaal makes a decision on the future of Erik ten Hag of Man Utd
Former Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has urged the Red Devils to stand with current manager Erik ten Hag.
Club officials are currently in the process of conducting a post-season investigation, which will include a decision on Ten Hag's future. The manager is under huge pressure after a disappointing campaign but was backed up by a surprise FA Cup win over Manchester City.
Van Gaal, who was sacked in 2016 just days after leading the club to FA Cup glory, admitted that Ten Hag's tenure had not gone well but insisted the 54-year-old deserved more time.
Asked if Ten Hag should continue in charge, Van Gaal said Sky Sports: “That's right.
“But I needed more time at Manchester United. I won the FA Cup again 20 years ago [no United manager] got the FA Cup.
“Now Erik is winning the FA Cup and the first year he's qualified for the Champions League so I don't think you should sack him. He needs more time but I can't criticize him too much. He hasn't done amazing – you can. criticize – but he's also shown that he's a good manager.”
In accordance with The IndependentUnited are yet to make a formal decision on Ten Hag's future as they have so far failed to come up with a viable alternative.
England manager Gareth Southgate is a top target but the Three Lions boss is refusing to discuss his future until after Euro 2024, and United do not want to part with Ten Hag without securing a deal to replace him.
Brentford's Thomas Frank has impressed officials, while ex-Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino is being watched, but no one has yet convinced United to make an official move.
Thomas Tuchel, who played for Bayern Munich, was considered a serious contender but is understood to have fallen out amid concerns about his ability to work under the club's current vision.
