Shams Increase Beef With Woj Over Dan Hurley's Controversial Report

Shams Charania talks to former mentor Adrian Wojnarowski about reporting on Dan Hurley and the Lakers' head coaching job.

Charania had previously reported that the Lakers were “going in” on JJ Redick, but two days later, Wojnarowski said that Dan Hurley was actually the frontrunner. Hurley then turned the Lakers around to stay at UConn.

Charania gave an interview to Pat McAfee, Wojnarowski's ESPN colleague, and weighed in on the whole situation.

“If the Lakers want to hire James Borrego, they have a month to hire James Borrego,” said Charania. “They had this week, after losing Dan Hurley — I think — they had this opportunity to go get James Borrego.”

“'I see like that'? What was that?” McAfee said, referring to Charania's thinly veiled jab at Wojnarowski.

At the time, former ESPN player Amin Elhassan said Wojnarowski reported Hurley's news because he was upset that Shams found him in the Redick story.

Bill Simmons, Ryen Russillo and Skip Bayless are among other media figures to make seemingly fishy allegations about the report from Wojnarowski, who is very close to the Hurley family.

Both Simmons and Bayless suspect Hurley must have spoken to the Lakers and used them as leverage to negotiate with UConn (which he is currently in, according to Wojnarowski). Woj also stood something to gain, in terms of getting the upper hand over Shams.

“I believe Dan Hurley went to the Lakers, not the other way around,” Bayless told Undisputed. “Although they tried to sell from the start, our first place to look for a coach was Dan Hurley. Then, why would you wait a whole month before you even talk to him… even meet him?

“But Shams reported last week that the Lakers signed JJ Reddick. Athletic was adamant about “it's your choice”… So help me. Isn't it clear that Dan Hurley introduced himself this time and said, “Hey, would you be interested in me?”
