Dan Hurley Reveals Text Exchange With LeBron During Coaching Giveaway
UConn coach Dan Hurley revealed that he and LeBron James had a text exchange before he made the decision to turn down the LA head coaching offer.
This information comes after multiple reports that James is not involved in the search for a new Lakers coach.
Hurley ultimately turned down LA's $70 million deal earlier this week, but shared that he and LeBron had been in contact before then.
“We had text messages and you know… an amazing message from him over the weekend just talking about basketball and different things,” Hurley said Thursday. The Herd with Colin Cowherd. “Also letting me know that if he was here, I would get his support. Think about that man. That blew my mind.
“We then exchanged text until it passed when I chose to go in the other direction. So, you know, it blew my mind there [I] get a message from LeBron James.”
In another talk show, Hurley said he had never spoken (in person or on the phone) to LeBron during the show.
“I didn't,” Hurley said The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz when asked if he had spoken to James. “You know, we had some communication. One of my first games I ever coached was in high school against LeBron, it was in Delaware when he was in St. Vincent–St. Mary High School.
“… I was on the court with him once and it would be interesting to coach him… I know he's looking for a great coach in that organization. I know that's important to him.”
JJ Redick will officially interview for the Lakers' top job, following Hurley's rejection.
