Gakpo praises the courage of the Dutch after coming back to win against Poland

Netherlands striker Cody Gakpo praised the way his team behaved after they beat Poland 2-1 in their Euro 2024 opener.

Ronald Koeman's side found themselves 1-0 down after 16 minutes when Adam Buska headed home in the absence of Robert Lewandowski.

But the Dutch rallied and controlled the ball, eventually scoring an equalizer through Gakpo, who beat Wojciech Szczesny.

The Liverpool man had a chance to double his tally in the game but sent Nathan Ake crashing over from close range.

But as he did when they faced Argentina in the World Cup two years ago, Wout Weghorst came up with his goal and hit it close.

It was a big win for the Netherlands, who will compete against France and Austria in Group D.

Dropping points may have put their place in the top-two at risk, but Gakpo always knew that one of his teammates could create something special.

Speaking after the game, the outstanding player said: “It was a difficult game, we are facing a difficult opponent.

“Obviously they scored first so it was a bit difficult. But we created a lot of good chances, good chances.

“We have to be more clinical. But overall, I think we did very well.

“We are a team that does not give up, we have good substitute players.

“We changed the whole field and they came in and did very well. So yes, that's a strength too.

“My family was here, in the stadium, so that was good.

“As for the scenes at the end, I can't explain them.

“It's an amazing feeling. I'm very happy that we took all three points.”
