Giants Place Kyle Harrison On 15-Day IL With Ankle Sprain

The Giants announced this morning that they have placed the lefty Kyle Harrison on the injured list with a right ankle sprain. Taking Harrison's spot in the lineup is the right-hander Spencer Bivens, who was selected in the minor leagues. The right hand Nick Avila he was released to clear Bivens' spot on the 40-man roster.

The news surrounding Harrison is troubling for a Giants club that has been without one Robbie Ray, Alex Cobbagain Tristan Beck all season and was recently sent to left Blake Snell back on the injured list due to a groin strain. Now, the club's long-time prospect will join them after a strong start to the season's first half. In 14 starts for the Giants this year, Harrison posted a league-average 3.96 ERA with a nearly identical 3.94 FIP, though he struck out just 20.6% of the batters he faced during that span.

It's unclear at this time how long Harrison is expected to be sidelined, though the news numbers leave the Giants in a strong position in terms of their rotation, where they currently rely. Jordan Hicks, Spencer Howardagain Keaton Winn behind the ace righty Logan Webb. For now, the club seems ready to opt for a bullpen game instead of Harrison, who is scheduled to start against the Angels this afternoon, with the rookie southpaw. Erik Miller already tab to open the game.

With the bullpen likely to be heavily dependent on both late and late, the Giants called up Bivens to replace Harrison in the lineup. Bivens, who will celebrate his 30th birthday at the end of the month, has spent his entire career in the Giants organization except for a stint in the Atlantic League back in 2022 but has yet to make it to the major leagues. With his big league debut seemingly imminent, the righty will look to carry his impressive 2.81 ERA and respectable 21.2% strikeout rate into the big leagues in a multi-relief role.
