Manchester United are looking to sign at least four players this summer.
On paper, United have many problems all over the pitch but defense has been a big factor for them in the 2023/24 Premier League season. Man United scored 58 goals in 38 league games last season. In comparison, Manchester City and Arsenal conceded 34 and 29 respectively. Because of this, it is clear that United need to strengthen their back if they are determined to return to the top of the English game and end what would have been a 12-year wait for another league title.
In an attempt to solve their defensive problems, Man United appear to be targeting Everton and England defender Jarrad Branthwaite. Earlier this week, it was claimed that Man Utd had agreed personal terms with Branthwaite over a move to Old Trafford, with a contract worth between £150-160k a week on the table. However, the two clubs have yet to agree a transfer fee, with United having a bid of £45m recently knocked back with the Toffees eyeing a fee closer to £75m.
Man Utd made a £30m+ bid to sign the midfielder
It's not just Branthwaite that the Manchester outfit want to bring in this summer. David Ornstein has told the Athletic FC podcast that the Premier League giants are looking for a full-back, a midfielder and a striker – and a move for a left-back could also be on the cards.
Now, an update has emerged regarding the Red Devils' midfield target. The player who is being watched by Man United is Bayern Munich and the star of Germany, Leon Goretzka. United's interest in the 29-year-old emerged earlier this week and Spanish outlet El Nacional have since launched a new report on the situation.
Midfield has been a problem area for Ten Hag and co last year, leading to 19-year-old Kobbie Mainoo being called up to the first team. The youngster made 24 Premier League appearances last season and was far and away United's best midfielder – earning himself a place on the plane to Germany and England for Euro 2024.
Apart from Mainoo, however, the Manchester club's options are not encouraging, leading to the aforementioned report from El Nacional which claims that United are aiming to find a partner for Mainoo and have identified Goretzka as an option. Ten Hag appear to be a fan of the German player as they have asked the club to start signing him, and a fee of around €40m (£33.86m) is said to have been made for the player, who has a contract in Bavaria. until 2026.
