Southgate believes Alexander-Arnold has shown good discipline in midfield

England kicked off their Euro 2024 campaign with a hard fought win over Serbia on Sunday evening.

Jude Bellingham headed home the only goal of the game after 13 minutes, and Gareth Southgate's men held on despite being under pressure in the second half.

England are one of the favorites for the tournament given the talent they have in their squad, but there are one or two questions hanging over the squad.

Perhaps the biggest of all is the formation of a centre-half and flanker for Declan Rice, with Southgate opting for Trent Alexander-Arnold over Conor Gallagher and youngsters Kobbie Mainoo and Adam Wharton.

Alexander-Arnold performed well overall, showing good quality on the ball with his passing range and ability to pick up a pass, but concerns remain about his defensive ability and whether he has the discipline to play in the middle of the park.

Roy Keane warned Southgate that Liverpool's ace could be found in midfield against better teams and it's hard to argue with that despite a superb performance on Sunday night.

Southgate praised the 25-year-old saying he thinks he shows “great discipline” and singled out his range of passes.
