Angel Cabrera has been crowned the Legends Tour match play king in Hertfordshire as he won the Paul Lawrie Match Play at Hanbury Manor.
The field was whittled down from 64 on Thursday to the last two men standing on Sunday afternoon, and it was an exciting final, with two-time winner Angel Cabrera battling it out with three-time Legends Tour leader. winner and MCB Road to Mauritius 2022 champion James Kingston face off.
There was fun on the tee, but just before their tee time a hard focus appeared on both men's faces.
First blood went the way of the Argentinian, who won the second hole, but it was nine holes where seven holes were cut – with Kingston winning the 8th to go into the turn with the match tied.
Cabrera would go on to win for the 12th time to get a chance at the start of the back nine, only for Kingston to make things right again when he won for the 14th time.
But the 2007 US Open and 2009 Masters champion won in straight sets at 15 and 16 to make it two to play.
At the age of 17, Cabrera missed a left and was in a critical position among a small group of trees. Kingston hit the fairway, but his approach shot would end up in the fairway – while Cabrera hit an 8-iron from 177 yards to under 10 feet. When Kingston hit a low shot that ran past the pin, the South African conceded the game to Cabrera.
“I've worked hard for the last three months for this moment, so I'm very happy,” said the 54-year-old Argentine, who hasn't won a professional tournament since 2013. “We are not kidding. a lot of tour play, but I like the format, and I had to play hole by hole. I can say that I feel very affected now.”
In the third place playoff, Greig Hutcheon defeated Bradley Dredge 2&1.
