Kylian Mbappe will undergo surgery on his broken nose against Austria
Kylian Mbappe broke his nose during France's win over Austria on Monday night and will undergo surgery in Dusseldorf.
France played unsatisfactorily but won 1-0 thanks to Maximilian Wober's goal in the first half.
The biggest concern for Didier Deschamps will be the fitness of Mbappe who broke his nose after colliding with Kevin Danso.
Mbappe will have surgery on a broken nose
The Real Madrid star had to leave the pitch covered in blood and was booked for re-entry as he tried to be substituted, before he was eventually replaced by Olivier Giroud towards the end.
Deschamps said after the game that Mbappe's nose injury does not look good and the striker was not doing well.
“He is not working well,” said Deschamps.
“You are with the medical staff, and I had a lot of questions from the media before coming here, so there is nothing else I can tell you.
“But his nose was hit badly, that's true.
“We'll have to look at that, but it seems complicated, which is unfortunate for us tonight.”
It was then confirmed by the French Football Federation that Mbappe has broken his nose and will undergo surgery in Dusseldorf.
This means the 25-year-old will have to wear a mask for the rest of France's campaign depending on the extent of his injury, and Deschamps has insisted the France squad will remain strong with Mbappe in it.
“I will not go into thinking, but I will say what I always say, the French team with Kylian will always be strong, the national team will always be strong with him,” added Deschamps.
But if, and I use your 'if', the issues are not along these lines, we will have to not have him.
“But Kylian is Kylian, and whatever team he's on, the team is always very strong.”
France will hope that Mbappe will be able to take part in their next group game against the Netherlands on Friday before they complete the group stage against Poland.
