After suffering a heavy loss at the US Open on Sunday, Rory McIlroy refused to speak to the media, leaving the parking lot in his luxury car and heading home to Florida.

He stayed in the field for this week's Travelers Championship, the eighth and final PGA Tour Signature event of the season, until he was listed for Wednesday afternoon's interview, after the pro-am.

But on Monday, McIlroy released a lengthy statement on social media, detailing his plans for the next few weeks — not including tournament golf.

“Yesterday was a tough day, probably the toughest day I've had in 17 years as a professional golfer,” McIlroy wrote. “First of all, I would like to congratulate Bryson. He is a worthy champion and is exactly what professional golf needs right now. I think we can all agree on that. As I think about my week, I will handle a few things during the tournament, especially the putts on 16 and 18 on the last day. But, as I always try to do, I will look at the good of the week that far outweighs the bad.

“Like I said at the beginning of the tournament, I feel closer to winning my next championship than ever,” McIlroy continued. “One word I can describe my work as is tenacity. I have shown my strength many times in the last 17 years and I will do it again. I will take a few weeks before the match to process everything and build myself up to defend the Genesis Scottish Open and The Open at Royal Troon. See you in Scotland.”

McIlroy had a chance to end a 10-year major drought at Pinehurst, but two missed putts under four feet, while a heroic play on the final hole from DeChambeau sealed McIlroy's finish as the runner-up.

McIlroy now has 21 top-10 finishes, including four runners-up, at majors since winning the 2014 PGA Championship.

The Genesis Scottish Open starts on July 11 at the Renaissance Club in North Berwick, Scotland, followed by the final championship of the year, the Open Championship at Royal Troon, which starts on July 18.
