The Rays are having a disappointing season so far in 2024 but that manager is unlikely Kevin Cash he will be in the hot seat for that. Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times recently took a look at the franchise's other options but noted that Cash is incredibly safe as his contract expires in the 2030 season.
It was reported in February that both Cash and president of baseball Erik Neander had been signed to long-term extensions. Topkin reported at the time that the deals extended beyond 2028, but their length was unclear. This additional report from Topkin sets the record straight, at least for the Cash deal.
The Rays have been incredibly successful in the Cash era. He took over in 2015 after Joe Maddon left to take over as the Cubs captain. The Rays posted losing records in the first three seasons under Cash but then went 90-72 in 2018. That would have been good enough for the third American League Wild Card spot but there were only two at the time. In the five seasons since then, the Rays have made it to the postseason in each of them, even reaching the World Series in 2020.
The club is 34-38 this year and is currently in last place in the American League East, but not completely buried in the standings, just six games out of the playoffs. Even if the club can't get back into contention, it's understandable that it wouldn't fall on Cash's head. His record is solid and this season's problems can be attributed to things outside of his control.
Go Franco he was supposed to be Tampa's long-term shortstop but has been out of the team since August as he is being investigated for having sex with a minor. The Rays also traded for young players Tyler Glasnow, Manuel Margot again Andrew Kittredge in the near future to reduce the salary. Many stuck players have endured meltdowns, with Randy Arozarena, Yandy Diaz and others who are performing well below their previous levels this year.
Perhaps the club will return to the race this year or perhaps focus on the selloff deadline, a decision that will reportedly wait until closer to the July 30 deadline. Either way, it looks like Cash will be the bench boss for years to come.
