McIlroy to take 'short break' from golf to process US Open fall – Golf News

Rory McIlroy said he would take “a few weeks before the match to process everything” after throwing away the chance to win his first major in a decade at last week's US Open.

The 35-year-old missed two putts within three feet of the final three holes at Pinehurst on Sunday, leaving him one shot behind winner Bryson DeChambeau.

The Northern Irishman left Pinehurst minutes after DeChambeau holed the winning putt, leading many to criticize him for not staying to congratulate the new champion in person.

McIlroy wrote on X on Monday evening: “Yesterday was a tough day, probably the toughest I've had in my almost 17 years as a professional golfer. First, I would like to congratulate Bryson. He is a worthy champion and is exactly what professional golf needs right now. I think we can all agree on that.”

“As I think about my week, I will fix a few things during the tournament, especially the two who missed 16 and 18 on the last day. But, as I always try to do, I will look at the good of the week that far outweighs the bad.

“As I said at the beginning of the tournament, I feel closer to winning my next major title than ever. One word to describe my work is 'perseverance'. I have shown my strength many times in the last 17 years and I will do it again.

“I will take a few weeks before the match to process everything and build myself up to defend the Genesis Scottish Open and The Open at Royal Troon. See you in Scotland.”

The Genesis Scottish Open is held at the Renaissance Club in East Lothian from July 11-14.
