Simons transfer: Arsenal should enter the discussion

Arsenal have been tipped to at least enter into talks over a possible transfer for Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Xavi Simons this summer.

Specially speaking CaughtOffside In his latest column for the Daily Briefing, Charles Watts has given us the latest information on Simons' situation, with the Gunners reporter not yet aware of any concrete efforts taking place so far to sign the Netherlands international.

Simons spent last season on loan at RB Leipzig and had another good campaign, as he also showed great potential during his spell at PSV Eindhoven, before PSG exercised his buy-out clause.

The 21-year-old would be an interesting addition to many of Europe's top clubs, but it remains to be seen whether PSG will let him go again, with a loan move more likely than a permanent move.

It remains to be seen whether that will suit Arsenal, but Watts suggested they should consider the opportunity if it presents itself.

Simons transfer: Arsenal tipped to be in 'discussion'

Xavi Simons to Arsenal?

“Xavi Simons is another player who seems to always be linked with Arsenal,” said Watts.

“I have to say, I haven't heard anything yet that they are going to take him, but if PSG are open to letting him go on loan I think Arsenal should at least enter into the conversation.

“Simons was fantastic for Leipzig last season and ticks many of the boxes Arsenal are looking for when it comes to adding something different to their attack.

“Arsenal want to sign someone who has the ability to open teams from nothing. Last season it was accepted that the team had problems, especially in tight games, opening up a packed defense. The Champions League second leg exit in Munich was one of those moments.

“High level figures at the club accepted after this loss that an X-Factor type player was not in the squad. Someone who had the ability to do something for no reason would open up a defense.

“Simons has shown he can do that, which makes him an interesting option, even on loan.”

Watts added, however, that Crystal Palace's Michael Olise would be his preference over Simons.

“He wouldn't have been my first choice,” Watts added. “I think I would prefer someone like Michael Olise to play that role in the team. But Simons could be one of the more tempting prospects on the market to look at this summer. “
