Ryan Garcia, the most controversial man in boxing, has revealed that he is out of the boxing business. “I'm officially retired,” the popular Californian said on social media Wednesday evening. The fact that Garcia made such an announcement on the eve of an important decision from the New York State Athletic Commission raised some eyebrows. Garcia, after all, tested positive for the performance-enhancing drug ostarine in his system before and after his April 20 victory over Devin Haney in Brooklyn. The fact that the Commission is on the verge of stopping Garcia, or even taking away his victory over Haney, may have something to do with Garcia's decision to retire from professional boxing.

Then again, is Garcia really retiring? The man always takes to social media to make one bold statement after another. Garcia's erratic, sometimes inexplicable behavior has led many to feel that something is wrong with the hard-hitting player's emotional state. And, although only Garcia and those closest to him know what the truth really is, it's hard for many to ignore the man's public and often confusing antics. The fact that Garcia was recently arrested in Beverly Hills for vandalism doesn't calm any nerves.

Before announcing his retirement on Thursday, Garcia took to social media, appearing to open up. “My mom has cancer – I'm being sued – My appendages were contaminated – Going through a divorce – IT'S BEEN TALKING ON THE INTERNET FOR YEARS AND YEARS -Devin is asking for my win to be taken away – I'm getting hit by everything – GOD STILL LOVES HIM, HE'S EVERYTHING.” Garcia later said “When I'm going through a really difficult time in my life I'm human I'm not God I'm going to make mistakes.” Whatever one may say about Garcia, it is clear that the man is struggling.

Although he remains one of the best-selling – and most successful – practitioners of the sweet science, Garcia now gets attention for his life outside the ring. In this respect he resembles Mike Tyson, who dominated both the boxing ring and the tabloids during his prime in the 80s and 90s. One can only hope that Garcia ends up going more smoothly than Tyson before he finds himself in a tough situation years after his career is over. Boxing is a dangerous enough sport without the world watching the fighters' lives unfold before their eyes.
