Tim Bradley thinks it's a bad idea for Devin Haney to take a year or two off the game after losing to Ryan Garcia last April.
Bradley thinks it's a bad move on Haney's part to willingly sit out a year or so because he's in the prime of his career, and it's not a good idea to lose it.
Not a Boat Like the Garcia
Haney is not in the same boat as Ryan Garcia (25-1, 20 KOs), who received a one-year ban by the New York State Athletic Commission on Thursday due to his positive PED test last April.
After losing to Ryan, Haney (31-0, 15 KOs) may have lost his desire and passion for the game. He may be unsure about moving on and just wants a big payday before retirement. Haney wouldn't be the first fighter to retire after a loss.
Loss of Ambition and Unrealistic Expectations
It's hard to know what affects Haney the most. Losing Ryan or his desire to get only big paydays. It could be Haney's unreasonable expectation of only wanting money, like what he got from Ryan, and that's not going to happen.
There aren't enough big stars in the sport and the following with Ryan wanting to fight Haney, especially if he's headed to 147.
“He wants to take a year or two. I don't think it looks good. I know you are young, 25 or 26. Take your little break. Maybe it will take a year or two. Why? Why?” said Tim Bradley on Fighthype about Devin Haney talking about wanting to be out of the ring for a year or two.
“Fighters must understand that not all fights are created equal. If you make 5 million dollars to fight, then you fight a mandatory opponent. It's not the same. You're not going to make $6 million or $5 million. It doesn't work that way.”
Haney may have thought he was in the PPV bracket after his fight with Ryan, and it's a bitter pill for him to swallow to get the kind of money he's been making over the years. The truth is that even Ryan wasn't going to make a lot of money fighting Sandor Martin, but he wasn't going to expect it or be upset about it.
“That's the standard. $1.5 million. It is what it is Take it or leave it. If you don't like it, take the belt off, but I don't think Devin will be at 140. I think 140 goes out the window. I think you are going up to 147. We'll see what he does there,” said Bradley.
Take a Break, But Don't Waste Your Prime
“Take a year off, relax and enjoy your life. Take care of yourself because you've been beaten in some way, and you'll get back there. Don't leave your best years behind. You haven't reached your first period yet, and you're still young enough. You have to be mentally strong and have heart,” Bradley said.
