Lyndon Arthur Edges Liam Cameron By Split Decision, Over 175 Odds
Lyndon Arthur resumed his winning ways.
The former light heavyweight title challenger defeated Liam Cameron by a ten-round split decision. He had to sweat counting the 95-93 scorecard for the underdog. That card was defeated 95-93 and 97-91 by Arthur in their main event on Channel 5 on Friday at Bolton Whites Hotel, Bolton, England.
Arthur (24-2, 16 knockouts) fought for the first time since losing on points to WBA light heavyweight Dmitry Bivol (22-0, 12 KOs) last Dec. 23.
He started quickly and landed his ramrod jab. This weapon quickly drained the blood from the nose of Cameron (23-6, 10 KOs), who had won three fights after a five-year hiatus from boxing. Arthur finished the round with a nice uppercut right hand that caught Cameron's attention.
Cameron got the upper hand on his opponent early in the second round, with a combination of punches that sent Arthur into the corner. However, the 33-year-old remained calm and although he had to hold back, he managed to land his right hand. The bell went to end the round and Arthur threw another right hand rather than catching Cameron, who seemed to think about it and took full advantage of the moment of the touchdown. Arthur was admonished by referee Howard Foster for a foul and a point deducted.
In the third round Arthur went back to his jab which was key before withdrawing and putting himself on fire. In the next round Cameron appeared to get the better of Arthur, who in turn responded by damaging the Sheffield man with a right hand that sent Cameron to the ropes. Cameron, who had never been stopped, used that knowledge and cunning to roll with the punches and get out of a tight spot early in the round.
Foster leveled things up by taking a point off Cameron with a rabbit punch in the sixth round. Both men's faces continue to show signs of wear and tear from what has been a very good contest.
Cameron had more success in the seventh round, especially landing a right hand. Arthur responded by grabbing his shoulder and having to hold back a furious Cameron.
Arthur's better fuel tank took over in the closing stages and it was he who pushed the action with a visibly tired Cameron often giving up and punching behind to cross the line to finish the fight.
“I may have dropped my standard a little bit there, but I got the W,” Arthur said afterward. “Maybe I looked at my weight wrong, we know I didn't weigh yesterday, it won't happen again.
“I want big fights, anyone and anything that makes sense. Well done to Liam it was a great opportunity, thank you for sharing the ring with me, you gave it a great opportunity. He ran a little at the end, which is probably what caused the scorecards to be more open, he was punching as if he was winning the fight, but he wasn't doing much, he was running on the gloves.”
His promoter was impressed enough to set himself lofty goals for the near future.
“I don't think Lyndon wants to wait, he wants those big fights and I think the biggest fights are in Britain,” said Wasserman Boxing's Nisse Sauerland. “You have Dan Azeez, Josh Buatsi, Willy Hutchinson, I think Craig Richards will be back again. We want one of those names. He has been with Bivol, we must return to that level. It wasn't the best game tonight and you still won, that's the sign of being a champion.”
