Nelly Korda missed out on Women's PGA Championship after 81 – Golf News
Sarah Schmelzel and Amy Yang grabbed the lead in the Women's PGA Championship as world number one Nelly Korda fell with a second-round 81.
Korda, who opened with an 80 at the US Open two weeks ago after winning six of his last seven matches, missed out on the ax after starting the tournament tied for second.
He opened his second round with four straight bogeys and had to wait until the 18th to make his birdie of the day by a stroke at Sahalee Country Club in Washington state.
“There are no words for how I'm playing right now,” said Korda. “I'll go home again and try to reset.
“I did a lot at the beginning of the year, and I'm taking it back.”
American Schmelzel carded six birdies in a 5-under-par 67 to move atop the leaderboard alongside South Korea's Yang, who had a bogey-free 68.
Schmelzel, undefeated in six years on the LPGA Tour, said: “I had a little look at the leaderboard at 17 and realized I was in the lead.
“It was good to be able to finish that well, again, knowing that I was leading in the main competition.
Overnight leader Lexi Thompson recovered from a double bogey, making three birdies to come home with a 72 that left her two strokes back of Korea's Jin Young Ko and Japan's Hinako Shibuno.
Ireland's Leona Maguire carded a 71 to stay three strokes clear of the lead with England's Charley Hull two shots back on 73.
