Romelu Lukaku scored the third goal of the Euro 2024 in Belgium against Romania
Romelu Lukaku scored his third goal of Euro 2024 in Belgium's 2-0 win over Romania at the RheinEnergieStadion.
The Red Devils ran out narrow winners on Saturday evening thanks to a superb goal from Youri Tielemans in the first 73 minutes and an 80th minute strike from Kevin De Bruyne.
Amazingly, Tielemands' goal was Belgium's first in five hours of tournament football between Euro 2024 and the 2022 World Cup – they scored one goal in Qatar and were knocked out in disgrace at the group stage.
Belgium have perhaps been unlucky not to have scored a few goals at Euro 2024 so far, with Lukaku getting sent off three times in the first two games of the tournament.
The Chelsea-owned striker was assessed for offside and a controversial handball during Belgium's 1-0 defeat at the hands of Slovakia on the opening day of Group E.
And surprisingly, Lukaku saw another goal ruled out by a VAR check on matchday two, with the striker adjudged to have been a bit too careful before curling a fine shot into the bottom left corner of the net.
Speaking about his unlucky striker in front of goal ahead of the clash with Romania, Belgium manager Domenico Tedesco said:
“We talked yesterday after training, but we always talk because he is one of the most important players in the team,” Tedesco told reporters on Friday. “It is important [to understand] what he thinks, I really ask him his opinion.
“You just need to score one goal [and more will come]. You really do [score] twice, but they were dismissed. We all want him to score six goals in six chances, but that's not true, even if he has the quality to do it.”
In the end, Lukaku's disallowed goal would have had no impact on Saturday's result, with strikes from Tielemans and De Bruyne enough to shut down a spirited Romanian outfit.
The result means that all the teams in Group E will go into the final day tied on three points. Belgium will face Ukraine in their final game at the MHPArena at the same time as Romania face Slovakia at Deutsche Bank Park on Wednesday evening.
