After 59 years of history, Cam Young made a confession

After Cam Young's final 10-foot par putt on the 18th hole, just short of the left fairway, the 27-year-old knew he had just made history.

But less than five hours earlier as he prepared for his third round at the Travelers Championship, breaking 60 was nowhere near him.

Young made seven birdies and two eagles at TPC River Highlands on Saturday to move into contention for the 2024 PGA Tour's Final Signature Event with the 11th golfer under 59. He became the 12th different golfer to break 60 on the PGA Tour and the second to do so. at TPC River Highlands.

But on Saturday morning, he was just worried about contacting her, he said afterwards.

“I didn't feel very good,” Young said of his pre-round warm-up. “I took a few more off the list than I did yesterday.”

It's not easy to rebuild a professional's confidence when the takeaway is to hit a few Underneath pieces. It's not easy for most golfers to relate to someone who just shot scores in the 50s on the PGA Tour, but if there's one thing about Young's historic day on Saturday that weekend hacks can relate to, it's to score a few more.

On the 9:45 a.m. tee time, just the 11th of the day, Young said he wanted to go back to sleep after his wake-up call.

He might as well have slept on the first four holes of his third round, because it was the start of a dream. The young eagle birdied the first two holes and then putt a sinker from 142 yards for the third. He added another birdie on the 4th for a five-under four-hole start.

“You're out and about and things are starting to go down the drain,” he said.

Young said he never thought about breaking 60 during his round, but he knew he could put together a special low round when he birdied the 8th and 9th holes to open 28. to seven feet on the 280-yard par-4 15th and made an eagle putt to 10 under for the round.

“I hit all over that club and I ended up hitting one right on it,” Young said of the shot. “I think I said something, just give me the proper buns.” And so it was. I mean, where that ended up would be a great pitch from the front of the green. So, you know, a really good swing and a good strike, but for it to end up somewhere where you can 2-tap it is impossible. You could hit the same one a hundred times and you'll get two on that plateau right here. “

Golf is a funny game. You never know where you hit one club, and it hits within 10 feet from about 300 yards. Even if you don't get the clubface on the range and end up breaking 60.
