Andy Robertson 'hurt' by Scotland's Euro 2024 exit

Scotland captain Andy Robertson admitted tonight's defeat to Hungary meant an early exit from Euro 2024 was “very bad” and will take “a long time to get over”.

Steve Clarke's men knew that just a win in Stuttgart would be enough to move up as one of the best third-place finishers but that didn't seem likely with a performance high on power but woefully short on quality.

Scotland failed to muster a single shot on target and were eventually held back by Kevin Csoboth's goal in the 10th minute of injury time that gave Hungary a 1-0 win to finish third in Group A.

Liverpool defender Robertson told the BBC: “There's nothing you can say to be honest. Give us everything.

“We knew we had to win this game, and they beat us on the counter-attack. It could have gone either way, but that's football – that's how it goes. It will take a long time to get through this.

“We had a lot of possession, in the first half, we didn't do anything with it. We had to find that good skill and work on it little by little. We went for it, but we got punched. Drawing would not be enough realistically.

“Tonight and for a long time we have to go through this. It's difficult. It hurts. All the boys are completely free. I will say thank you to all the fans; I'm sorry to disappoint you all.”

Goalkeeper Angus Gunn added: “It's hard to be honest. I thought everyone gave their best, the goal in the end was because everyone was going for it.

“The effort we made today showed the fans and the country what it means to us. We created opportunities, we got opportunities [but] it didn't go well for us, the deflection didn't go our way and we couldn't score.

“At the end of the day we're out and nothing matters anymore.”
