Man United legend 'offered role as Old Trafford coach'

Manchester United's three-time goalscorer Ruud van Nistelrooy has been offered a coaching role in Erik ten Hag's staff, according to a report.

Former PSV Eindhoven manager Van Nistelrooy spoke to Championship side Burnley about their managerial position this week, reports BBC Sport, but Fabrizio Romano has now set United to approach the 47-year-old.

Van Nistelrooy led PSV to second place in the Eredivisie and KNVB Cup in 2022/23. He previously had spells as assistant manager of the Netherlands and in charge of the PSV team.

Van Nistelrooy: Burnley overlooked?

The former Den Bosch and Heerenveen striker made his name by averaging nearly one goal a game for PSV between 1998 and 2001, going on to win every major trophy in England and United between 2001 and 2006.

He scored 95 goals in 150 Premier League appearances before leaving in 2006 for Real Madrid, where the two-time Dutch Footballer of the Year won La Liga twice.

It was widely reported that Ten Hag would be sacked regardless of United's success in the 2023/24 FA Cup final, which they won 2-1 against arch-rivals and Premier League champions Manchester City.

In a surprising development, Sir Jim Ratcliffe's Ineos Group, which has taken over the club's football side, has asked Ten Hag to stay.

“The team management approached me while I was on holiday in Ibiza,” Ten Hag told Dutch TV channel NOS, via BBC Sport. “They just came to my door and told me that they want to continue with me.

“Manchester United told me that they have spoken to him [Thomas] Tuchel, however, finally came to the conclusion that they have the best manager.

“Ineos took their time. They are new to football, it is normal for them to think about the season. It's no secret that they talked to many candidates.”

United's eighth-place finish in 2023/24 was their lowest ever in the Premier League season and they exited the UEFA Champions League in fourth place in their group.

Former Ajax manager Ten Hag added that he has yet to agree to the terms of a new deal with the 20-time Premier League winners.
