Boston Boston Trade Linus Ullmark to the Ottawa Senators

Before Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Final went down, the Boston Bruins traded goaltender Linus Ullmark to the Ottawa Senators for Mark Kastelic, Joonas Korpisalo, and a 2024 first-round draft pick (25th overall).

The Senators will keep 25 percent of Korpisalo's remaining salary as part of the deal.

NHL rumors: Ottawa Senators looking at all targets, including Linus Ullmark

Korpisalo is four years old at $4 million AAV. Since Ottawa retained the title, it dropped to $3 million. Meanwhile, Ullmark is entering the final year of his deal at $5 million AAV.

Korpisalo has a modified 10-team no-trade clause.

The Bruins have been looking to move Ullmark's salary since the trade deadline. They couldn't do it because of his modified no-trade clause. He had to agree to any trade.

We know that Ullmark blocked a trade in Los Angeles in March. With Jacob Markstrom and Darcy Kuemper traded, Ullmark was the next domino to fall. The Bruins needed to make room to sign goaltender Jeremy Swayman.

NHL Rumors: Did Linus Ullmark Play His Last Game in Boston?

Swayman could get as much as an eight-year extension worth $8-$8.5 million in AAV. Therefore, the Bruins could not carry $13 million in goaltender salaries. Unless they move from Korpisalo, they will have about $11 million in goalie salaries if Swayman approaches this number.

There is no extension as part of Ullmark's deal with the Senators, but he is not eligible to sign until July 1.

The Senators were looking to increase their goaltending after Korpisalo posted one of the worst save percentages of the season. Senators GM Steve Staios hopes this will solve the Senators' problems and get them back into contention.

Boston also adds depth with Kastelic at center. He is not the first center they need; he's quick, plays with a visible edge and can put the puck in the net on occasion. In other words, the ideal Boston Bruin is like a Morgan Geekie.
