Gareth Southgate explains what went wrong for England in the Euro 2024 group stage

Gareth Southgate has admitted that England have lacked luck in front of goal so far in their Euro 2024 campaign.

The Three Lions may have finished top of Group C but Southgate and his players found themselves under a lot of pressure after three bad performances, the last of which was a 0-0 draw with Slovenia on Tuesday.

As Southgate drove to the fans after the game, several cups were thrown his way as disgruntled fans vented their frustration, and the England manager admitted he understood the fans' frustration.

“I thought we improved a lot with football,” he said ITV after the final whistle. “We created good chances and at the moment it is a difficult task for us.

“We haven't got that break in front of the goals. I think the players who entered did well. I understand the reaction but it's a difficult situation.

“We tried to win the game with the changes we made, putting attacking players on the field.

“Tonight we went with Conor [Gallagher] who presses well and we do it better. Then we saw that Kobbie Mainoo's ball control would help us. I don't think we will start from where we were winning 3-0 or 4-0.”

Defender John Stones also urged fans to look for the positive and always support the team entering the play-offs.

“The aim was to be top of the club and we've done that – it won't always be an easy road,” insisted the Manchester City defender. “It will not be easy when we are faced with the crime of beating us.

“I thought there was a lot of improvement in the other two games, we found people in the pockets and created a lot of chances – another step in the right direction.

“I can make fans feel bad for not taking chances, but that's football – it's never an easy game.”
