The Brewers will select the contract of Dallas Keuchel before this afternoon's game against the Rangers, reports Kennedy Landry of MLB.com. The 2015 AL Cy Young winner came to the organization from the Mariners on Tuesday for cash. Milwaukee will need to make room for Keuchel on the 26-man and 40-man rosters.
Keuchel's start today will be his first in 2024. After seven highly successful years with the Astros from 2012-18, the southpaw signed a one-year deal with the Braves in 2019 followed by a three-year deal with the White Sox before the 2020 campaign. Although he made a strong impression in his first season on the South Side of Chicago (1.99 ERA in 11 starts), he struggled over the next two years, eventually being released in May 2022.
After brief stints with the Diamondbacks and Rangers in the 2022 season, Keuchel signed a minor league deal with the Twins in June 2023. He eventually made 10 appearances (6 starts) for Minnesota, posting a 5.97 ERA in 37 2/ 3 innings included. . While his overall numbers were disappointing, his 3.04 FIP and 4.10 xFIP against lefties were promising evidence that the veteran can still retire similar hitters.
Keuchel was not signed through the entire 2023-24 season before inking a minor league deal with the Mariners this past April. The 36-year-old was released in May but signed a new league deal with the organization three days later. Under the terms of that deal, he will make a split portion of $1.5 million during his time with the Brewers, with the option to earn additional incentives (via Adam McCalvy of MLB.com).
Milwaukee has lost the most starting pitchers in the IL this year. DL Hall again Joe Ross They are currently working their way back from their injuries, however Robert Gasser again Wade Miley they are made for the season. Brandon Woodruffwho had shoulder surgery last fall, is also out for a year. Jacob Junis, who opened the year in the rotation, made an extended return to IL this past weekend. However, he is currently pitching out of the bullpen. So, it's obvious why the Brewers could use an arm like Keuchel. Although he hasn't had major league success since the 2020 season, he can eat up the innings for Milwaukee, and he gives the team a left-handed option in the rotation. He has a 3.93 ERA but a 5.51 FIP in 13 starts at Triple-A this year.
The right hand Colin Rea it was scheduled to start this afternoon. Fortunately for the Brewers, there is no evidence to suggest that Rea was scratched with the injury, according to Curt Hogg of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. Instead, manager Pat Murphy may opt to give Rea a few more days off. With 82 innings under his belt this season, the 33-year-old is on pace to surpass his previous professional career high in innings pitched. Given all the injuries the Brewers have already had this year, keeping Rea fit and healthy is extremely important.
