Golf Business News – Colin Mayes to step down as CEO of Burhill Group
Burhill Group Ltd (BGL) announced today that Colin Mayes has informed the Board of his intention to step down as Group Chief Executive Officer on March 31, 2025 after 19 years in the role.
In his role as CEO, Mayes oversaw the transformation of BGL into one of the UK's most successful golf businesses. During this time the BGL business owned by the Guinness family has grown from eight golf courses in 2006 to 29 today, with two more due to open later this year.
Mayes is widely regarded as a progressive and dynamic leader in the industry and has always strived to bring new ideas and innovations to the field of golf. Many of BGL's businesses are recognized as leaders in their market segments, whether in health and fitness centers, adventure golf (indoor and outdoor) or technology-enabled driving ranges.
He was also instrumental in developing BGL's expansion into the leisure market, but also the people who grew up with it. Under Mulligans and BUNKERS! brand, now there are 14 active businesses. Alongside the expansion of the young family activity market through the development of five Ninja UK locations, this growth has turned BGL into a year-round leisure business, protected from the seasonal challenges often found within traditional golf courses.
BGL Chairman Edward Clive commented: “The Board is pleased to honor Colin's leadership of the Group. Colin has had a long and distinguished career in the hospitality industry and as a family we are very grateful for his valuable contribution to the Group. He has transformed the business from just golf to a comprehensive leisure business, while delivering high returns to support reinvestment in Group ESG's ongoing initiatives and our BGL team. The Group is in a strong position as it enters the next phase of development and growth.”
Mayes added: “It has been a great honor to lead BGL since 2006 and to see our business and our great team of people grow and develop. I am confident that there is still significant opportunity for continued growth, and I want to thank all involved and wish them continued success in the next phase of BGL's development. It has also been a pleasure to serve on the Boards and support our great industry through both UKGF and GCAE Europe.
“I look forward to spending more time with my family and participating in various sports, as well as staying active in business.”
The board has begun a formal process to find a replacement, considering both internal and external candidates. Mayes will continue as Group Chief Executive Officer during this process and ensure a smooth and orderly transition.
