JJ Redick Responds to Duke University Alum Who Accuses Him of Using a Racial Slur

Less than 48 hours into his tenure as Lakers head coach, JJ Redick is already facing controversy.

Redick was a star basketball player at Duke before his 15-year career in the NBA.

Halleemah Nash, author, speaker, and Duke alum took to X for the allegations against Redick.

“I've been called the N-name to my face by a white person once in my life and I was on the campus of Duke University when I was doing work with the basketball team,” he said. “And today he was appointed as the new coach of the Los Angeles Lakers. What a country.”

Redick and his people have denied the allegations.

TMZ Games reached out to for a response and a spokesperson told the outlet, “No, it never happened”.

Redick has never coached in the NBA and will retire from the league in 2021.

He started working as an NBA analyst ESPN not long after that he was also the lead analyst for the 2024 NBA Finals on ABC.

“This process has been surreal, to say the least,” Redick said. “I take this job very seriously … The Lakers have the most passionate fans around the world, and the expectation is a championship, so it's my job to bring a high-quality team. That's what I signed up for.

“I just felt like this is what I have to do. I have no experience coaching in the NBA, but I would argue that I have extensive experience. It started 22 years ago when I went to Duke.”

Redick has already confirmed that the podcast he and LeBron James started together will not continue as he takes on one of the toughest coaching jobs in the NBA.
